How to restore degraded landscapes by bringing together skills, expertise, and access to finance?
Landscapes become degraded for a range of reasons including deforestation and the soil erosion that follows. The impacts of land degradation include increased flooding, reduced food security as well as the loss of biodiversity. Practices that can restore landscapes are recognized as an important and practical response to climate change – however successful restoration projects can be complex and difficult to implement. How can we provide a simple package of services so that landowners can easily restore landscapes to benefit people and nature?
Kenya's land degradation is a result of loss of soil fertility due to deforestation.
EnSo's Response
Deliver sustainable, long-term economic benefits in Kenya through a model that provides landowners with the ability to easily access the necessary technical and commercial resources and secure investment to undertake landscape restoration and reforestation.
Typically landowners hold assets in the form of land, but they are unable to realize the potential benefits from undertaking reforestation and restoration activities due to the complex technical, legal, and commercial considerations.
The innovative project aims to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems – in this case, forests – to address the impacts of climate change, to halt and reverse land degradation and reduce the loss of biodiversity. The Forest-in-a-Box model brings together in a single package – the technical and commercial resources needed to support landscape restoration and reforestation for both public and privately owned land.
